Colonel Doug Walter

Colonel Doug Walter graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY in June 1995 and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer. After completion of the Infantry Officer Basic Course and Ranger School at Fort Benning, GA he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, KY where he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Rifle Company Executive Officer, and Battalion Assistant Operations Officer.
In July of 1999, he attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course at Fort Benning, GA. The following year he was assigned as a Current Operations Officer for United States Army Europe, G3 in Heidelberg, Germany. In that position he deployed as the U.S. Army Europe liaison officer to Task Force Falcon, Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo in support of KFOR 2B.
In 2001, he was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division Vilseck, Germany as the Brigade Plans Officer. In 2002, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment in Vilseck where he initially served as the Battalion Maintenance Officer and subsequently deployed to Camp Monteith, Kosovo in October 2002 as the Battalion Civil Affairs Officer and Commander, A Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment in support of KFOR 4B. In 2004, he deployed to Baquba and Muqdadiyah, Iraq where he served as the Brigade Assistant Operations Officer and again as the Commander, A Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment. Following redeployment from Iraq in 2005, COL Walter was assigned to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, LA where he served as a Task Force Operations Observer Controller until 2007.
In 2007, COL Walter attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS and following graduation in 2008 was assigned as the Battalion Executive Officer for the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division in Fort Wainwright, AK. He immediately deployed to Baquba, Iraq and upon return was assigned as the 1-25 Brigade Executive Officer. As the Brigade Executive Officer, he deployed to Zabul and Kandahar Provinces in Afghanistan in 2011.
COL Walter was then assigned to Fort Belvoir, VA in 2011 and served as the Theater Operations Officer for the Rapid Equipping Force, Department of the Army G3/5/7. In August of 2012, he was assigned as the Chief, I Corps Commander’s Initiative Group at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA. Subsequent assignments at Joint Base Lewis-McChord included Commander, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment from February 2013 to March 2015 and the Director, Stryker Warfighters’ Forum. COL Walter most recently served as a U.S. Army War College Fellow
assigned to the University of Notre Dame.
