All Service members must complete pre-separation counseling no later than 12 months prior to their separation date. The pre-separation counseling is an individualized plan and a road map for a successful transition to the civilian sector. Available resources, identification and individual transition plans are made available to attendees.
The Transition Assistance Program (TAP) workshop provides separating personnel the skills and knowledge needed to obtain a new career. Attendees are taught principles in setting objectives, networking, writing resumes’ and cover letters, interviewing techniques, salary/benefit negotiations, and other job search skills. Information is also provided to attendees regarding veterans’ benefits, health insurance, joining the Reserve and National Guard, and how to file for disability and unemployment insurance benefits.
The SFL-TAP Center offers a variety of transition services that include: automated pre-separation counseling, assistance and training in the job search process, coaching, and a variety of automated job information services. SFL-TAP utilizes an automated system called TAP XXI. TAP XXI is a self-paced interactive, multimedia computer based training system that provide the capability for clients to directly access the computers for services previously provided through group instruction and/or counseling. For example, the service member will be able to complete his/her pre-separation counseling, which is mandated by public law, using this system.
